Corrections: The Kettle Road culvert, the smelt parade route, and the weight of Mrs. Holcomb's potato salad
The editors of this newspaper acknowledge the following errors and inaccuracies that appeared in recent editions.
Kettle Road culvert dimensions
In our March 14 report on the Wexagaw County board meeting, we stated that the proposed Kettle Road culvert would measure eighteen inches in diameter. The correct measurement is eighteen and one-quarter inches. County Engineer Raymond Talbot has asked us to note that the quarter-inch is "load-bearing in the figurative sense" and that our error "misrepresents the scope of deliberation." We apologize for the oversight.
Furthermore, the culvert vote was not tabled for the fourth time at that meeting, but for the fifth time. The fourth tabling occurred at the February meeting, which this newspaper did not attend due to weather.
Smelt Days parade route
Our March 21 coverage of Pell Harbor's Smelt Days festival incorrectly described the parade route as "new." Parade chairman Donald Vreeland writes to inform us that the route — east on Harbor Street, north on Pickerel Avenue, west on Dock Street, concluding at the boat launch — has been in continuous use since 1983, with the exception of 1991, when the boat launch was closed for resurfacing, and 2003, when it was closed again for additional resurfacing.
The route is not new. We regret the error and any confusion caused to out-of-town visitors expecting novelty.
Potato salad weight
In our Community Notes column of March 16, we reported that Mrs. Eleanor Holcomb brought seventeen pounds of potato salad to the Lenten fish fry at St. Brendan's parish hall. Mrs. Holcomb has contacted this newspaper to clarify that the potato salad weighed sixteen and three-quarter pounds. The bowl, she notes, weighed seven ounces, and "someone was counting the bowl."
We apologize to Mrs. Holcomb and have reminded our correspondent that kitchen scales should be zeroed before weighing.
Fire chief surname
In the same March 16 column, we identified Tamarack Township Volunteer Fire Chief Lawrence Wojciechowski as "Wojiechowski" (transposing the 'i' and 'e' in the third syllable). Chief Wojciechowski has served the township for twenty-two years. We have spelled his name incorrectly in six separate editions since 2019. This newspaper commits to maintaining a dedicated style-book entry going forward.
Bandstand concert date
Our March 9 photo essay on the Holcomb Memorial Bandstand stated that the final concert took place on August 14, 1997. Bandstand historian Phyllis Krantz writes that the correct date was August 17, 1997, and that August 14 was a Thursday, when no concerts were ever scheduled. Ms. Krantz has provided a xeroxed program as documentation. We apologize for the error and thank Ms. Krantz for her diligence.
